North West police concerned after teacher arrested for allegedly raping pupils

CAPE TOWN - North West Police Commissioner Sello Kwena has expressed concern over the rape of two minors, allegedly by their primary school teacher.

Kwena said that teachers should be protecting children from abuse.

Police arrested the 47-year-old suspect who they say would ask the two children to help him carry books to his office where he allegedly attacked them.

The suspect has since appeared in the Wolmansstad Magistrate's Court on two counts of rape of minors.

"The suspect’s court appearance emanates from his arrest on Thursday, 16 May 2024, at Leeudoringstad after the mother and the principal of the two minors, aged 12 and 14, registered cases at the local police station on Tuesday, 14 May 2024,"  North West Police Spokesperson Amanda Funani.

The accused has been remanded in custody and will appear in court next week for his formal bail application.
