Heidelberg man dies after being locked in cold storage for allegedly stealing chocolate

Bandile Shabalala, aged 33, passed away after allegedly being confined by a Shoprite manager in a cold storage room on suspicion of stealing a chocolate bar.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza, during closing time, one of the men, Shabalala, complained of stomach aches.

Paramedics were called, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Ratanda police have opened a case of assault common as well as an inquest docket.

This interview comes in preparation for the upcoming retirement of Chief Justice Raymond Zondo in August.

She stated that addressing capacity issues in the country's courts, especially the Constitutional Court, would be one of her top priorities if she were appointed Chief Justice.

The Judicial Service Commission is also currently conducting interviews for the position of Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has nominated Judge Dumisani Zondi for this role.
