CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape government says it has completed the installation of solar power in 48 schools to protect teaching and learning.

According to the provincial government, power cuts are expected next week.

It said that L.E.D lights have been installed to reduce electricity usage and cost.

According to the government, 71 more schools have applied to install solar systems on their account, reducing the demand on the energy grid.

It has also distributed 71 load-shedding relief kits for pupils across the province.

Each kit includes a solar panel charging station, and lights to ensure learning continues during power outages.

The provincial government adds that it has prioritised Grade 12 learners to receive solar kits, as they need to study for final exams, and grade 1 pupils who need to practise their reading daily.
