JOHANNESBURG - In line with South Africa's commitment to free and fair elections, some citizens have signed up to be election observers.
One of those who signed up is singer, PJ Powers, who has been working with the organisation Ground Work Collective.
The role of an election observer provides ordinary citizens an opportunity to have oversight over the electoral process.
Powers has praised the voting process.
"I popped down to Joubert Park because I heard machinery wasn't working but things are starting to go quickly. Then I went up to Witkoppen, which is where I am voting. I was shocked. It was wonderful to see the different camps. It was wonderful to see the ANC, the EFF, the DA and everyone chatting together."
Powers has also reflected on how voting in the country has progressed since she first cast her ballot in 1994.
"This seems to be one of the most organised elections. I do take my hat off to the Ground Work Collective and the IEC. Well done, obviously, we don't live in paradise. There are going to be some mishaps, there are going to be some issues but let's focus on the positives."
