JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA has exited the Multi-Party Charter (MPC) for South Africa.

The party said its members would now have to go back on their promise of not working with the African National Congress (ANC).

Formerly known as the Moonshot Pact, the charter is a group of opposition parties that aimed to wrestle power away from the ANC after the elections.

However, the parties which formed the charter could only manage just above 30% collectively, which falls short of a governing coalition.

ActionSA held a media briefing on Thursday on the outcomes of its senate meeting.

The party’s national chairperson, Michael Beaumont, said the party’s highest decision-making body had decided it must pull out of MPC.

"ActionSA entered into the MPC on a good faith basis, once the DA [Democratic Alliance] committed to the declaration of intent in Section 7 of the MPC agreement - this is the section that specifically ruled out any working arrangement with the ANC. The MPC agreement has been seriously breached by political parties, plural."
