CAPE TOWN - The Cape of Good Hope Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has described a video showing a man beating a dog in Green Point as harrowing and deeply unsettling.

The SPCA said it had launched an investigation after receiving the disturbing video of a man beating a Boston Terrier at least 30 times with a wooden object.

The two-minute video begins with the dog lying petrified on a concrete floor.

The dog is then pinned down and beaten before he finally wriggles from his grip and runs for the refuge of his kennel.

Cape of Good Hope SPCA spokesperson, Belinda Abraham, has thanked the person who provided them with the video that led to the man's arrest.

"Community vigilance is definitely one of our greatest assets in the fight against animal cruelty. We sincerely appreciate those who are brave enough to speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves. Please continue to report animal cruelty," Abraham said.
