The all-new Mini Countryman has landed in South Africa, and motoring journo Melinda Ferguson test drove the C model all the way from Joburg to Mpumalanga over varied terrain.
The first thing you'll notice about the third generation Countryman, is that it's significantly bigger than its predecessors, says Ferguson.
"It's grown 130 millimeters longer - that's a lot, and 60 mm taller. It's grown almost to the point where you go, oh my gosh is this still a Mini!"

The new Countryman is her choice of Mini now, Ferguson says.
"I love the fact that you can go on gravel; it's got really good ground clearance. It's got some toughness about it."

At the same time, Mini has 'gone all the way' with the high tech incorporated into these new models she says.

This includes Mini experience modes that change the appearance of the cockpit with a combination of visual design, ambient lighting and sound design.
They've still managed to keep a retro vibe, Ferguson says, with manual knobs and switches featuring below the central, round OLED display.
"What I also really liked is that they've used a lot of reclaimed, recycled upholstery. The dashboard was kitted out in this knitted textile made from recycled polyester."

The Countryman C is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, producing 125kW and 280Nm.
The starting price for the entry-level model is just under R725 000, while the top-end electric model is priced from R1 086 000.
