First sitting of National Assembly to take place on Friday

The Chief Justice has determined that the first sitting of parliament will happen on Friday (14 June) at 10 AM.

The Constitution mandates that the first National Assembly sitting must take place not more than 14 days after election results have been declared.

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has determined that the first sitting shall take place this Friday (14 June) at 10 AM.

At this sitting, the Chief Justice will administer the prescribed oath or affirmation to members of the National Assembly and members will be sworn in.

Following this, Zondo will preside over the election of the Speaker and the President.

The first sitting of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will take place on Saturday (15 June) and a chairperson will be elected.

The Chief justice has also designated Judges-President in each province to determine the first sittings of the provincial legislatures.

These must also take place within 14 days of the declaration of election results, which occurred on 2 June.
