CAPE TOWN - A man is expected to appear at the Bellville Magistrate's Court on charges of presumed stolen property to the value of R1,7 million.
 
The suspect was caught in possession of a huge consignment of cigarettes and alcohol in Burgundy Estate in Durbanville on Friday.
 
Police say the goods are suspected to be proceeds of crime after a truck carrying the exact items was reported hijacked in Klapmuts a week ago.
 
"The gathering of intelligence regarding the possible escape routes and suspicious warehouses led the integrated crime combatting team to a storage facility in Burgundy Estate. At this facility, the police members discovered a huge consignment of alcohol and cigarettes. The adult male at the warehouse, a foreign national could not provide the proof of purchase and was subsequently arrested for the mentioned property," said Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Joseph Swartbooi.
