While the pivotal role of mothers is widely acknowledged, it's essential not to overlook the profound impact fathers have on their children's lives, particularly in the upbringing of young boys, according to the Parent Centre.

Studies have shown the significance of a supportive father figure who provides emotional support and cognitive guidance in a child's learning journey.

Research indicates that children who benefit from such paternal involvement tend to cultivate stronger peer relationships and demonstrate enhanced academic performance.

With Father's Day approaching on 16 June, it's important to recognise that discussions about fathers and their roles often evoke ambivalence or negativity.

However, Hoffenberg emphasises that acknowledging and appreciating paternal contributions is crucial.

The Parent Centre outlines several key benefits of father involvement for children:

  • Fathers' positive presence significantly contributes to children's cognitive development, intellectual functioning, and academic success.
  • Children raised with actively involved fathers are less prone to experiencing depression, fear, and self-doubt.
  • Active paternal involvement reduces the likelihood of boys seeking alternative sources of masculine identity, such as involvement in gangs.
  • Children develop more secure relationships with partners of the opposite sex.
  • Having a father in the household correlates with positive outcomes, including improved access to community resources, heightened protection, and increased household expenditure.

To foster these positive outcomes, initiatives like their Fatherhood Training Programme offer support to fathers, helping them forge strong bonds with their children and equipping them with essential skills to navigate the complexities of parenthood effectively.

Hoffenberg highlights the importance of changing the narrative of what it means to be a dad.

"We very much promote positive parenting, which is about being loving and connected and communicating with your children, but at the same time also holding firm boundaries."
