Last-minute changes made to MP candidate lists

CAPE TOWN - Several political parties have made last-minute changes to their list of candidates who will be sworn in as Members of Parliament (MPs) on Friday.

By lunchtime on Thursday, Parliament said it had already registered 180 of the 400 MPs who will take up seats in the seventh administration.

The administration said it was on track for the first sitting, which is expected to cost around R58 million, compared to R43 million five years ago.

For the first time in the history of the institution, the first sitting of a new administration will not be held on the Parliamentary precinct.

The Cape Town Convention Centre has been set up for the first sittings of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces over the next two days.

Secretary to Parliament, Xolile George said several political parties had been in contact on Thursday to make last-minute changes to their candidate lists.

At least 20 requests have been made to either fill vacancies or supplement lists.

“The following changes have been made to the party lists: the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party - seven members, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) - ten members, ActionSA - one member, the Democratic Alliance - one member and the United Democratic Movement (UDM) - one member."

George said those who don’t pitch to be sworn in by the chief justice on Friday can be sworn in by the new speaker at a later stage.
