Police management on track to pay 55,000 officers election overtime

JOHANNESBURG - Police management said that it is on track to pay 55,000 police officers' overtime for the work they did during the election period.

This after the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union, (POPCRU) in KwaZulu-Natal issued a call to the national South African Police Service (SAPS) to pay what is owed to members.

Police Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said that they have started with the payments and remain on track.

"The National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola declared the elections as a special event. We have made provision for overtime allowances. Special allowance was made for members from the 27th to the 29th of May. Any member that worked before and after the elections will get the normal day-to-day overtime."

Mathe urged members and police unions to be patient.

"We are sitting at 66% nationally of the payments that have been made we are handling a large number of members that have to be paid, more than 55 000. Provinces like Northern Cape have finalized payments and fs is sitting at 90%. We are still busy with payments, we are on track. We request members to be patient. Members will get what is due to them."
