Young creatives, Nando's wants your designs!

Clarence Ford speaks to Nikhil Tricam of Kalki Ceramics who won the Nando's Hot Young Designer (HYD) award for their flora-inspired Fynbos Server in 2022.

Calling all young, up-and-coming creatives! The Nando's Hot Young Designer (HYD) competition is underway for 2024.

Emerging creatives are encouraged to chase their own ‘Screen Dreams’ and submit decorative-yet-functional screen designs that capture a uniquely South African aesthetic.

Winning designs will be showcased in Nando's restaurants around the world.

For 2024, the challenge for designers is to create 'screens.'

In 2022, Nikhil Tricam and Nindya Bucktowar of Kalki Ceramics were the winners for their flora-inspired Fynbos Server.

Want to win?

Tricam shares some designer to designer top tips saying:

'Adaptability' will be a big winning factor.

"Have something that is free standing and something that can be fixed to a wall, interior, exterior, above chairs, above bunks and have an honest and innovative use of materials - if you're going to use timber or steel - make it look like timber or steel, don't make it look like something it is not."

Tricam says their business' participation in this challenge has had a 'massive positive impact.'

Winning the competition also allowed Tricam's business to scale as they shipped items to the UK, USA, Middle East, all over South Africa and Australia.

"It has given us a platform to test the limits of our ability with a willing and understanding client who commissions pieces and  is willing to try new things and allows us to try new products and get it out into the world."
