Young people weigh in on Ramaphosa’s highly anticipated Cabinet announcement

JOHANNESBURG - Some young people have weighed in on their expectations of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s upcoming Cabinet announcement.

Many South Africans are anxiously waiting to see the composition of Ramaphosa’s multi-party Cabinet under the Government of National Unity (GNU).

Eyewitness News has spent some time in the streets of Johannesburg engaging the youth about who they want to see in public office.

The bustling streets of Braamfontein are often filled with varsity students - most of whom walk to campus every day hoping for a bright future.

But Monde Momo and her group of friends are not convinced the new cohort of ministers will make a difference.

"These people don’t think about us as the youth. Most of us have degrees, we have the documents to be in the right places, but we can't get there because of them. Most of them are in there for no apparent reason. They’re not supposed to be there."

Another student, Timothy Peterson, said there’s a skills deficit in South Africa’s political space.

"Certain members of our Parliament don’t even have the necessary qualifications to be where they are. So, I feel like since they don’t really care about us, we don’t really care about politics."

The students said they don't believe that the GNU will consider the needs of the youth.
