To celebrate Bishops Diocesan College's 175th birthday, a group of parents, teachers, and learners embarked on a remarkable journey.
Among them was Lynda Heyneke, who, despite having only 2% vision in one eye and none in the other, successfully summited Kilimanjaro.
An avid runner, Heyneke is no stranger to physical activity, but this journey took her to new heights – literally and figuratively.
It required not only extensive physical preparation but also significant mental fortitude.
"We just thought, why not?"
- Dr Lynda Heyneke
Climbing up the mountain posed fewer challenges for her than descending, as she lacks depth perception.
Navigating the varying step heights was difficult, but with the help of an expert, she adapted and overcame these obstacles and her husband played a crucial role, guiding her with techniques shared by the specialist.
"The up was easier than the down because I don't know how far down it is."
- Dr Lynda Heyneke
While on the hike, he walked in front, using luminous tags on his pants to help her follow.
Additionally, a special guide provided constant support, particularly on the steep areas, ensuring her safety and success.
"He, I think single-handedly got me up that mountain."
- Dr Lynda Heyneke
Throughout the journey, their guide’s mantra, "Strong hearts, strong mind, don't think it just do it," resonated deeply with Heyneke, encapsulating her approach to life.
She reflects that the climb required immense faith and serves as a testament to not letting circumstances prevent you from achieving your dreams.
