After two postponements, Lesufi finally announced his cabinet on Wednesday (3 July).
The 10-member cabinet under the banner of a Government of Provincial Unity includes seven ANC members and one each for IFP, Rise Mzansi, and the Patriotic Alliance.
- Finance: Lebogang Maile (ANC)
- Human Settlements: Tasneem Motara (ANC)
- COGTA: Jacob Mamabolo (ANC)
- Health: Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko (ANC)
- Transport: Kedibone Tlhabela (ANC)
- Education: Matome Chiloane (ANC)
- eGov: Bonginkosi Dlamini (IFP)
- Agriculture: Vuyiswa Ramokgopa (Rise Mzansi)
- Environment: Sheila Mary Peters (PA)
- Social development: Faith Mazibuko (ANC)
“I am glad we finally have 10 men and women to run our province that will take up to the next level… I believe we can show South Africans that despite our differences we can work together.”
- Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Premier
However, the ANC-led legislature will face challenges going forward as the Government of Provincial Unity is a minority government.
They only occupy about 32 of the 80 seats in the legislature – less than 50%.
Notably missing is the Democratic Alliance.
While the cabinet has been announced, Lesufi says the door for negotiation remains open.
“We are in partnership with the DA at national level, we are running South Africa together and there is no way we can fail to run Gauteng together.”
- Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Premier
“I will still persuade because if we include everyone we will spend more time servicing our people rather than covering our backs.”
- Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Premier
