Tshwane DA: ANC losing out on waste removal contract the reason it wants to remove Brink
In a media briefing on Friday, the ANC said it intends to file a motion of no confidence against Brink, citing a deterioration of governance in the capital city.
Millions lost at landfills in Tshwane
JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane said that frustration over missing out on lucrative waste removal tenders is behind the African National Congress (ANC) wanting to remove Mayor Cilliers Brink.
In a media briefing on Friday, the ANC said it intends to file a motion of no confidence against Brink, citing a deterioration of governance in the capital city.
However, the DA is disputing this, saying there were ulterior motives at play.
As of the first of July, the Tshwane municipality introduced new regulations for its waste contractors.
It said all trucks collecting waste for the capital city needed to be not older than nine years, have tracking chips and be roadworthy.
As a result of these new regulations, the city said it had to drop 60% of its old contractors whose vehicles did not meet the new requirements.
DA Tshwane chairperson, Jacqui Uys, said that this was the real reason behind the ANC’s motion of no-confidence
"It is clear to me that what it's really about is the waste removal contract and an ANC leadership that is standing to lose out."
ANC regional secretary, George Matjila, said a majority of the 60% contractors that were dropped were black businessmen, who represented a key constituency for the party.
