Never Forget: Jimmy Nevis and Craig Lucas on song for doccie on iconic Luxurama

Jimmy Nevis and Craig Lucas tell their stories and the story of Never Forget on Weekend Breakfast.

Beloved Cape Town singers Jimmy Nevis and Craig Lucas have collaborated on a very special song for the documentary A Cape Town Song: The Story of The Luxurama.

The upcoming doccie produced by Liesel and Nicki Priem (Little Bad Badger), highlights the untold stories of the iconic Luxurama Theatre in Wynberg.

Nevis has described the film as 'a tribute to the artists and musicians who have shaped the legacy of the Luxurama Theatre, honouring their impact on our community'.

 Sara-Jayne Makwala King finds out more from the two musos in studio.

When he was approached almost two years ago by the Priems, getting involved was 'a no-brainer', Nevis says.

Lucas was brought in just two weeks before the single was meant to drop, when it suddenly struck Nevis that he would be perfect for the project.

"The older I get, the deeper I go into my roots... and with this documentary there's an opportunity to almost rewrite history in the sense of really creating an official space for culture and for preservation of thing that are important to me."

"I can't even imagine being an artist during apartheid... The story is important; there are so many stories that need to be told, and joining this project was a huge honour for me."

Many of the interviews for the doccie were shot in the Lux, and Nevis describes the emotional experience of hearing people's stories being retold there, firsthand.

"It feels like this experience now only exists in some people's minds... and now  lot of these interviews will now be archived so that future generations can look back and see the legacy of the people that have come before."

The two musicians describe their longstanding admiration for each other, and how they eventually became friends and collaborators.

Lucas says Never Forget has made it possible for him to say the things he never could say before.

"I think being able to touch lives... is the biggest blessing. Jimmy wrote this song for the documentary but it just takes on a life of its own for me and what I've been through personally, and that's the magic of music."
