Africa Melane interviews Steve Mabona, Gauteng Department of Education Spokesperson.

The Gauteng Department of Education has said it's unable to intervene in the contentious results of an internal investigation into allegations of racism at Pretoria High School for Girls.

This follows the school's governing body clearing 12 students of any misconduct.

The students had been accused of participating in a 'whites only' WhatsApp group, where it was alleged that they engaged in racial microaggressions.

However, Mabona confirms that the Department will initiate an independent investigation to assess whether a culture of racism exists at the school.

"We respect the decision taken by SGB, but we are launching an investigation to look at all allegations of racism at the school."
- Steve Mabona, Spokesperson – Gauteng Department of Education

If evidence of a racist culture is found within the school, the investigative body will issue recommendations and proceed based on the findings of the investigation.
