JOHANNESBURG - South African musician Tyla is definitely flying the flag for her country after picking up three nominations for the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

She announced on social media that she was a nominee for Best R&B, Best Afrobeats, and Best New Artist, for her chart-topper, "Water". This achievement highlights Tyla's growing influence in the global music scene.

On 10 September, the VMAs will be broadcast live from New York's UBS Arena. For over 40 years, MTV has been presenting popular music every day of the week - a longer duration than many of the current generation of music enthusiasts have been alive.

She is up against competitors like Burna Boy, Chris Brown, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims in the categories she's been nominated for.

Tyla, who is only 22, received the Best African Music Performance Grammy at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, making her the youngest-ever South African Grammy winner.

Tyla's accomplishments go beyond her Grammy Award. At the 2024 Black Entertainment Television Awards, she recently won the Best International Act and Best New Artist awards.
