CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape said that secret talks between the Freedom Front Plus and the African National Congress (ANC) to oust its mayor in the Langeberg Local Municipality was one of the reasons its relationship with the FF Plus had ended.
The DA formed a majority coalition with the FF Plus when no party won an outright majority in the 2021 local government elections.
The DA said it was aware of discussions between the Freedom Front Plus' deputy mayor, J Steenkamp, and the ANC to join forces and pass a motion of no confidence against DA Mayor Schalk van Eeden.
DA Western Cape leader, Tertuis Simmers, said that the FF Plus' refusal to vote for the coalition's budget in May was the stick that broke the camel's back.
"The DA is committed to stable coalition governments and finding partners who are committed to the coalition itself in the broader interest of the community of Langeberg. Our regional chairperson and team will be engaging parties in that council to ensure that a new coalition government is formed so we can continue delivering high-level quality services which the community of Langeberg deserves."
