His populist politics is creating a phenomena around Arts and Culture minister Gayton McKenzie similar to that of 'fascists' Donald Trump, Narendra Modi and Rodrigo Duterte says columnist,  Sam Mkokeli.

In his latest opinion piece 'McKenzie’s comments straight out of Trump’s fascist playbook' Mkokeli says McKenzie, like Trump, is using popular rhetoric to make complex problems look easy.

McKenzie, who is the leader of the Patriotic Alliance, has had an eventful first few weeks in office.

"Gayton McKenzie is part of this wave, this growth [of populism]."

McKenzie was applauded when he said one of the first tasks he would undertake would be to make transparent all the financial dealings in his department.

But the applause turned to criticism from some when he set his cross hairs on so-called superfans like Joyce Chauke.

"You can take all the funding away from Mama Joy, Bafana Bafana is not going to win you the World Cup."

"He takes a real issue, but he never offers a solution."
