The solutions to Johannesburg's problems lie with its people.
So contends journalist Ferial Haffajee in her recent Daily Maverick article.
A long-term resident and advocate for the City, Haffajee says that despite the looting and neglect of the 'City of Gold', its residents remain determined to see it recover.

"It's a city that has a far greater imagination than its political leaders.'

"The people are forgotten as the new politicians climb over each other in a frenzy of extraction and taking, rather than giving. The promised revolutionary servant leadership never happens," writes Haffajee.
"The sheer dynamism of people who come... who make it work, who hustle around systems that don't work for them."

According to the Joburg Crisis Alliance, service delivery is continuously declining and newly-resigned Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda has failed to intervene.
Haffajee says the people of Johannesburg have every single solution to fix the City's governance problems.
"It's not like we need a big Indaba or the ANC's proposal for a task team for Johannesburg..."
