A plot of land in Rondebosch East has been greenlit to be released for a mixed-use development which could provide 800 residential units, among them affordable housing units.

The land on the corner of Kromboom Road and Seventh Avenue is made up of several vacant even, valued at around R155m.

A public participation process will be undertaken to allow members of the public to comment on plans.

The proposed sale would include a clause stipulating that the Kromboom Road land must incorporate an affordable housing component. If the land is not utilised for this purpose, the properties would revert to City ownership.

"It could be a really beautiful mixed-use development with roughly around 800 units."
Geordin Hill-Lewis, Cape Town Mayor
"People have asked, why there, and the answer is, we don't have many parcels around the City of that size."
Geordin Hill-Lewis, Cape Town Mayor

The earmarked land lies adjacent to the M5, one of the busiest highways in and out of the city centre.

Kiewit asks whether there are plans to support the surrounding infrastructure and prevent further congestion.

"When you you do a development like that, you do a traffic impact study and check what upgrades are necessary."
Geordin Hill-Lewis, Cape Town Mayor
"You probably won't need a huge amount of major upgrades."

On Thursday, Hill-Lewis and Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson toured  Public Works and Infrastructure-owned buildings in Cape Town. They assessed the buildings' potential to contribute to the city’s economic growth and job creation.
