BRICS was founded by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2006 with South Africa joining in 2010.

The founders called for a fairer world and the reform of international institutions.

Earlier this year, the intergovernmental organisation opened its doors to new members and Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates joined.

According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, 34 other countries want to join.
