JOHANNESBURG - The board of Transnet has paid its respects to former Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, describing him as a disciplined and principled leader.

Gordhan worked closely with the board during his time in the ministry, the last Cabinet post he held before his retirement this year.

The former minister died on Friday morning at the age of 75 after battling cancer.

In a statement, the Transnet board described Gordhan as a leader who believed in a higher purpose and who wanted public servants to strive towards that.

It said that Gordhan was a great champion and supporter of the board as it was working towards stability and recovery of the state-owned entity.

While the former minister was criticised by some for his work during his time at Public Enterprises, with some unions dragging his name into the power struggles at Transnet, the SOE’s board said that it worked well with Gordan in an open, transparent and honest way.

Chairperson Andile Sangqu said that Gordhan’s passing was a great loss to the country, the Transnet board and the parastal as a whole.
