Earlier this week, a CapeTalk listener voiced their frustration over the relentless noise from the new Prasa trains on the southern line.
They reported that the first trains rumble through Muizenberg around 3:20am, and the drivers persistently blare their horns, disturbing the entire neighbourhood.
"Being woken up by a train at 3:20 am every day is taking a toll on us!"
- CapeTalk listener
Maseko explains that trains cannot stop abruptly when approaching a level crossing.
Therefore, it is crucial for them to announce their presence well in advance to ensure safety before reaching the crossing.
“That would give motorists an opportunity to hear the train if they don’t see it, allowing them to react accordingly.”
- Raymond Maseko, Acting Regional Manager – Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa
However, he notes that this doesn’t eliminate the need to address the train noise levels and explore ways to collaborate with communities and residents.
