Lester Kiewit interviews Uyanda Siyotula, National Coordinator at the SOS Coalition.

The Constitutional Court has rejected former SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng's request to appeal a decision made by the Supreme Court of Appeal concerning the 'success fee' he received from the public broadcaster.

In 2016, the SABC board made an unlawful decision to award him R11.5 million for facilitating a deal with MultiChoice.

By court order, Motsoeneng was ordered to repay the R11.5 million plus interest, bringing his total liabilities to R18 million.

Siyotula highlights the absurdity of being rewarded this money for simply doing his job, especially given that he did it poorly and jeopardised the SABC.

"What was problematic about that deal was that it was irregular in the first place."

She emphasises that the key takeaway is the lack of proper oversight from the board at that time.

This underscores why the current SABC board is much more robust in its efforts to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Siyotula also notes that she and the SOS Coalition welcome the Constitutional Court's decision.
