Forbes labels South Africa as the worst country for violence against women, highlighting alarming statistics related to intimate partner violence, homicide rates, and women’s feelings of safety while walking alone at night.

The World Population Review estimates that over 40% of South African women will experience rape in their lifetime.

Furthermore, the recent South African Medical Research Council's National Femicide Study reveals that seven women are murdered every day in the country, with nearly 60% of these killings committed by intimate partners.

In this context, the news of Chris Brown's performances in South Africa is sparking outrage, especially considering tickets sold out in two hours.

"As much as he sold out FNB so quickly, there are many people who are appalled that Chris Brown is coming to South Africa and there are many, many, many people who are appalled that he is so comfortably popular."

Brown, who has a history of abuse – including a guilty plea for assaulting Rihanna in 2009 – was arrested in 2016 after model Baylee Curran accused him of threatening her with a gun during a dispute over a diamond necklace. He was released on $250 000 bail.

In 2017, a court ordered Brown to stay 100 yards away from his ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran after she detailed multiple threats against her and alleged incidents of physical violence, including being punched and pushed down stairs.

In response, Women For Change, a non-profit organisation advocating against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in South Africa, launched a petition to cancel Brown's performance.

They argue that hosting him would undermine the country's ongoing fight against GBV, especially as his performance is scheduled just days after the commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Corder says that powerful individuals, like Brown, possess methods to silence their victims.

He wonders how victims of ongoing abuse must feel witnessing unwavering support for Brown, a recognised abuser.

"I said on my TV show last night: full-time abuser, part-time singer."
