CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape government is raising concerns over the slow pace of implementing a turn-around strategy at the Port of Cape Town.

The provincial government said the operational challenges facing the port were costing apple and pear farmers more than R20,000 per hectare.

The World Bank Global Container Port Performance Index ranked the Cape Town Port as the worst-performing port in the world in 2023.

The World Bank Port Performance Index assesses efficiencies and how long container vessels stay at ports.

Last year, farmers and traders worldwide were threatened by delayed logistics and slow turnaround times.

Provincial MEC for Agriculture, Economic Development, and Tourism, Ivan Meyer: "The Western Cape economy is focusing on export-led growth and the efficiency of the Cape Town Port is critical for job creation in the Western Cape. Inefficiencies at the Port of Cape Town is estimated at the total cost of R1 billion to the Western Cape apple and pear industry alone."
