Eskom threatens to cut Joburg’s power: 'It’s the residents that will suffer'
Eskom threatens to disrupt the power supply to the City of Johannesburg due to its R4.9 billion debt.

Eskom has noted its intention to interrupt the power supply to the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) and City Power.
The City owes Eskom R4.9 billion, and an additional R1.4 billion which will become due and payable at the end of this month.

Fick says it is ridiculous that the City has a debt this large, but the response cannot be to cut the power.
She adds that the citizens of Johannesburg will suffer while Eskom and the City work through their dispute.
“Maybe one should pay Eskom directly if the City cannot do it.”
