CAPE TOWN - A former associate of an alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack, has admitted he conned Modack to get back money he was owed.

Modack faces charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice for payments he believed he was making to top cops Jeremy Vearey and Charl Kinnear.

Modack and 14 co-accused face 122 charges related to various crimes, including Kinnear's murder in September 2020.

Mohamed Hanware, a former associate of Modack, testified from the Middle East on Monday via Microsoft Teams.

Hanware told the court he became a paymaster for Modack's operation while he was behind bars between March 2017 and February 2018.

He said he had to fork out R1.2 million to pay wages on behalf of Modack.

However, Hanware said that when Modack was released, he refused to pay back the money.

Hanware said that he then hatched a plot to get his money back.

He allegedly told Modack he could influence Vearey and Kinnear with bribes to have six firearms seized from Modack returned.

Financial records show Modack paid R150,000 to Hanware but the money never got to Vearey or Kinnear.
