Robert Marawa chats to legendary football coach Zeca Marques.
Listen below.
Following several stints at Moroka Swallows and Black Leopards, Marques is ready to get back in the game.
He took a break from professional coaching in 2021 to focus on development.
“I’ve had a few opportunities to get back into the professional world but I just thought that the time wasn’t right, my mind wasn’t set properly. I just needed to recharge the batteries, upskill myself… and hopefully, when I get back, I’ll be a better coach.”

“I still have trophies to win, I feel it in me… I feel like I still have a lot to offer and, more importantly, making a difference in people’s lives. This is where I see myself going in the future with coaching.”

Reflecting on his time at Swallows, Marques says he is proud of his achievements.
He led the team to an MTN8 title in 2012.
Today he is disheartened to see what the club has become.
In addition to financial troubles, the team is not competing in the 2024/25 season and they were almost expelled.
“Swallows is about history, it’s about the heritage, it was one of the top three in the Soweto derby and it was the club that always played quality football.”
– Zeca Marques
“To look at the log now and I don’t see Swallows, it saddens me because the solutions were there to fix the club up – proper management, proper guidance, proper vision, proper leadership… I think the intentions were all right.”
