Lester Kiewit speaks to Michele Macfarlane, the sister of Ian Macfarlane, the man who was left in a coma after the Uber he was traveling in was struck by an out-of-control truck on Kloof Nek Road in October.

Ian Macfarlane was in one of the 17 vehicles hit by an out-of-control cement truck on Kloof Nek Road in October.

The incident occurred as the family were out celebrating Ian’s daughter’s birthday.

Macfarlane has been in a coma for over a month but woke up about two weeks ago and is in recovery, says his sister Michele.

"Originally, we were told that Ian had a 20% chance of making it through the night kind of thing... so compared to that, we are so so grateful for where he is, he is alive and defied the odds so to speak in terms of his recovery."

Macfarlane has moved to a rehabilitation centre which is working with him on how to walk and jog his memory.

The family says they are living in 'extreme gratitude.'

His sister also explains that with help from social media and Macfarlane's friends, she found the Uber driver (Adrina) who was also injured in the accident and taken to Groote Schuur Hospital.

The accident resulted in two surgeries for Adrina, including a bone graft from leg to arm.

His doctor has reportedly explained that he won’t be able to drive for two years, which means two years of no work.

Macfarlane's friends started a 'Back a Buddy campaign' to help the driver with medical bills which you can contribute to, if you're able to.
