JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng remains the most crime-ridden area in the country, with the province accounting for almost a third of all crimes committed.
On Friday, Gauteng police presented their second quarter statistics, covering the period of July to September.
The statistics showed that Gauteng accounted for 26.9% of all reported crimes in the country.
While this presents a decrease compared to the previous year, Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni said it was still concerning.
"We must take note. Gauteng is the province which is having the highest population, which is over 16 million [Census 2022, places Gauteng’s population at 15,1 million, the most populated province in the country], other provinces that follow might have eleven [million] and the rest of the other provinces don’t even have eight million. So, you can see in terms of that proportion, in terms of percentages, it relates to the numbers of which we are having."
Gauteng SAPS is today presenting the second quarter crime statistics for the 2024/25 financial year before the provincial Portfolio Committee on Community Safety.
