Pippa Hudson speaks with Miki Redelinghuys, co-director of Mother City.

Tuesday, 11 February, marks 59 years since district six was declared a ‘whites only’ area under the Group Areas Act.

The Act forced thousands of people out of their homes.

The city will commemorate this day with a ceremony at 10 a.m. on Hanover Street at the memorial cairn at CPUT, followed by the screening of two documentaries at the Homecoming Centre.

These documentaries spotlight Cape Town’s housing issues and the remnants of apartheid special planning.

First is ‘31 Chatham Street, with Soraya Martheze’, which is about the Dry Docks neighbourhood of District Six, and the other is Mother City.

Mother City is an award-winning documentary co-directed by Pearlie Joubert and Miki Redelinghuys.

It tells the story of housing activists in the City of Cape Town protesting the Tafleberg site sale.

“When we started making this film the question behind it was; how does change happen?”
- Miki Redelinghuys, co-director of Mother City

On Tuesday the Constitutional Court is expected to hand down its judgement on this case and the future of this site.

The screening will be free at 14h00 at the Homecoming Centre.

Booking is essential for the free screening and can be done on their website here.
