Lester Kiewit interviews Zackie Achmat about the execution-style murder of openly gay imam Muhsin Hendricks.
Listen below:
Imam Muhsin Hendricks, widely recognised as the world's first openly gay Muslim cleric, was tragically shot and killed in Gqeberha over the weekend.
A chilling video circulating on social media shows a gunman exiting a bakkie, firing multiple shots into the driver's side window of Hendricks’ vehicle.
The shooter then quickly re-enters the bakkie and speeds away.
Warning: The video may be disturbing to some viewers.
Achmat condemns the incitement of hatred toward the LGBTQ+ community by both the South African Judicial Muslim Council and the United Ulama Council of South Africa, comparing it to the racial hatred stirred by Donald Trump.
He calls for every political party and organisation to issue a statement addressing this issue.
"His execution is an attempt, not simply to terrorise queer people, but to terrorise other Muslims who support justice, equality and freedom for every person on earth."
