JOHANNESBURG - Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya has hit back at criticism that the G20 meetings set to be held in parts of the country this year will come at the expense of service delivery.

The reassurance follows concerns that a big budget would be set aside to host global leaders during South Africa’s G20 presidency.

While ministers and other high-level delegates will meet to discuss solutions to various global challenges, Tshwane and Johannesburg will also co-chair what is considered the local government leg of the G20 summit, dubbed the U20.

Moya was joined by Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero at the U20 launch.

She said the U20 meetings would not see residents’ needs placed on the back burner, adding that U20 wouldn’t be another talk shop.

"U20 is a global initiative, but its success will not be measured in communiqués and declarations alone. Its impact must be felt at a local level. This is not just about diplomatic meetings and international cooperation, it is about real economic opportunities, real investment, and real solutions for our people. It is about ensuring that the people of Tshwane and Johannesburg see themselves in this process and feel its benefits."
