Parents are now questioning the safety of their children at educational facilities.
Gobizembe is a rural area in Matatiele, far flung from the city centre.
It is mostly quiet, apart from the friendly exchanges between families and neighbours, and the sounds of shepherds herding livestock.
But beneath the lull, lies a home in distress after the rape of a seven-year-old girl last year.
Her relative said the little girl has never been the same since the ordeal.
"Three weeks ago, she was admitted to hospital. Something was leaking from her ears with a mixture of blood and pus. She is also unable to control her bladder, sometimes sitting and passing urine unintentionally. Her anger is also intense."
The minor has since been transferred to a school in KwaZulu-Natal to offer the child a fresh start.
