JOHANNESBURG - Political analyst Wayne Sussman said the Patriotic Alliance (PA) may become an obstacle for the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the next municipal elections, following the results in recent by-elections.

The PA has snatched a highly contested ward in Johannesburg from the DA, which includes communities such as Westbury, Newlands, and Newclare.

The DA finished the by-election in third place, with both the PA and the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) overtaking the party.

Sussman said this is a major victory for Gayton McKenzie’s political organisation.

"The DA will continue to be concerned by the Patriotic Alliance, particularly in a province like Gauteng and the more rural parts of the Western Cape, and this is a great result for the PA.

"They’re the only party in the City of Johannesburg to have won wards from other parties since the 2021 local government elections. Ward 82 is more complicated than other wards because it’s a diverse ward from a religious, race and class perspective."
