JOHANNESBURG - Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is on Tuesday set to meet with all Finance MECs from the nine provinces to discuss the way forward on the national budget impasse.

Godongwana is due to present his third budget next Wednesday, following two failed attempts.

The debacle around the budget has left provincial governments in limbo as their own budgets rely heavily on funds from the National Treasury.

At a media briefing on Monday, Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile said Tuesday’s budget council meeting will determine whether he will be withdrawing the budget he presented to the legislature in March.

“We will know whether they will cut any budget on our part, whether there will be any changes and that will determine whether we leave this budget as is or we amend it to the legislature but the legislature has already been informed by national they should be ready in the event we have to withdraw and present a new budget.”
