CAPE TOWN - A Kraaifontein man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for downloading and sharing child pornography.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Corne van Royen will also have his name added to the national register of sex offenders.
Van Rooyen was arrested last year after being flagged by the United States Department of Homeland Security.
During plea and sentencing procedures, van Royen admitted to using an online platform to broadcast, view and facilitate child pornography.
Van Royen was unmasked after United States Department of Homeland Security officials infiltrated his profile to identify him in 2024.
He pleaded guilty after being caught with 453 images and videos of child pornography on his cellphones and other devices.
NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said, "He was sentenced to a total of 49 years' direct imprisonment for all 10 charges, but the court ordered the sentences to run concurrently, giving him 12 years' direct imprisonment."
Ntabazalila added that Van Royen was also sentenced for the illegal possession of two firearms and cruelty to animals.
