CAPE TOWN - Gang and gun violence remain a harsh daily reality for many living on the Cape Flats, with some children too afraid to even leave their homes.
But one initiative, the Nyanga Hiking Club, is offering a safe and positive escape.
Each month, the club takes children from high-risk communities on hikes, giving them the chance to connect with nature and experience life beyond the violence.
Club member Dani Saporettei says the outings help build confidence, emotional resilience, and a sense of healing.
"What I'd really love is to get the children in the cable car up Table Mountain. That would be such an incredible opportunity for them. Another thing I'd absolutely love is to get them access to visiting the aquarium one Sunday in winter when it is impossible to get onto the mountains."
