iThuba Holdings will operate the lottery for another 12 months after Trade and Industry Minister Parks Tau granted the company an extension.
This move defies a Pretoria High Court ruling, which declared that an extension would be unconstitutional.
Tau is appealing this judgment.
Following the extension, Sizekhaya Holdings will take over the licence.
South Africa's national lottery has been embroiled in legal battles, contested licence awards, and shifting deadlines.

Pityana says he has been working hard to clean up the National Lotteries Commission in the last two years.
“We have had a lot of transformation, but the transformation is not yet complete.”

Pityana adds that they are working on changing the culture of the organisation at all levels to improve the running of the lottery.
