947’s Anele and The Club catch up with comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout hot off the heels of completing his first Comrades Marathon.

Listen below:

One of Mzansi’s most beloved comedians traded his mic for a pair of running shoes, channelling his inner Eliud Kipchoge for the Comrades.

The man who is known for his cheeky punchlines took on the gruelling 90km ultramarathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday (8 June).

He ran in support of Downtown SA, a haven for rescued dogs.

“I started a bit hard because I was running with Gerda Steyn, and we were just having such a nice jol. Then eventually, I was like, ‘It’s been two hours, Gerda, you must go, don’t wait for me.'”
– Schalk Bezuidenhout
“I did push really hard because I wanted a sub-10; I managed to get that. It was gruelling… But I was like, if there’s going to be a year to really go for a goal, I must do it now.”
– Schalk Bezuidenhout
“I am reminding everyone every day and every chance I get.”

Despite the inevitable post-race fatigue, aches and pain, Bezuidenhout is already eyeing the next one.

“The next time I want to do one more for gees and just have fun.”
– Schalk Bezuidenhout

For him, running not only provides great material for jokes but it helps clear his mind and keeps his heart in check.

It’s a great reminder that small daily choices, whether on the road, on stage or in the kitchen, can go a long way towards a healthier, happier heart.

“I was just proud of myself… If you put in the work, I promise you, you’ll finish… I really think with the Comrades, the most important thing… you [must] do the prep.”
 – Schalk Bezuidenhout
