DURBAN - ActionSA in KwaZulu-Natal has urged political parties to work on creating a peaceful political environment ahead of the 2026 local polls.

The call comes after a gunman opened fire on Action SA party supporters on Sunday.

This forced the party to cancel its branch launch outside the Durban CBD.

The accused, Xolani Hadebe, appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court on charges linked to the incident.

Elections are always hotly contested in KwaZulu-Natal, and as the next local government election looms, some parties are worried about politically motivated violence.

In the past, the province has experienced pre-election violence and in some cases, it turned deadly.

After this weekend’s incident, ActionSA in the province said political parties should prioritise tolerance.

ActionSA’s KZN leader Zwakele Mncwango said: "So we appeal to other parties as well to really talk to their members to calm down before the election because we know local government elections are always much contested. We don’t want to see such cases where people are killed for their political choices."

Mncwango believes the political task team investigating political cases is needed to maintain order.
