JOHANNESBURG - While Parliament is demanding more clarity from Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane on the controversial appointment of what is supposed to be an independent advisory panel, the man who Nkabane said was meant to chair the panel says he never agreed to do the job.

In a leaked letter seen by EWN, dated 16 June 2025, Advocate Terry Motau said that he learned via news reports that he was the chair of the panel, assisting in the selection of SETA board members.

Motau said that while he was approached for the role, nothing was finalised.

He said that he did not help Nkabane or her office to review or assess nominations received.

He also said that he did not get any information relating to the process, and did not convene any meetings with the panel.

When EWN called Motau for comment, he said he was waiting to hear from Parliament's portfolio committee on higher education on a way forward.
