F1 The Movie: 'You don't want to miss it if you're a racing fan, but it's long at over 2 hours'

F1 stars Brad Pitt as a race-car driver making a comeback and was filmed at actual races during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

CapeTalk's Amy MacIver (in for Sara-Jayne Makwala King) is joined by TV and movie reviewer Gayle Edmunds for 'What We're Watching' on Weekend Breakfast.

Brad Pitt is back in leading-man mode as a race-car driver who returns to Formula One after a 30-year absence in the movie F1.

It was made with the collaboration of international governing body the FIA and involves real-life F1 drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, who was a producer on the film.

F1 also stars Javier Bardem as the Pitt character's former teammate who now heads a struggling race team.

"Pitt plays a very reckless driver, racing legend Sonny Hayes, who's invited back because his friend's team is looking like it will be excluded... he needs to help a rookie driver who is very good but lacking the necessary experience."
Gayle Edmunds, TV and Movie Reviewer
"It becomes a story about his comeback and him learning to work together with a team."

While F1 is a must-see for racing fans, says Edmunds, it falls short on character development.

This is despite a running time of 2 hours 35 minutes.

"You just don't invest in the characters as much as you should have... Overall they actually filmed 5,000 hours of footage and having Lewis Hamilton as a producer and also Jerry Bruckheimer whose films are always long, they needed to take a bit of a machete to it in my opinion."

"It was filmed at Silverstone during the 2023/24 circuit and has a lot of great elements, but they didn't fall together successfully enough for me to sit through 2 hours and 35 minutes without feeling it."
