Mike Wills (in for CapeTalk's John Maytham) speaks to power and energy expert, and former executive manager at Eskom and senior executive at City Power Johannesburg Vally Padayachee.

Listen below:

It almost seems to good to be true, but so far 2025 has had very few days of loadshedding.

Padayachee says thanks to the good work being done at Eskom, the winter plan is going well.

"I spoke to my colleagues at Eskom system operations... they've given me the thumbs up that for the foreseeable future we will not see loadshedding."
- Vally Padayachee, Energy Expert

Padayachee does warn that we are not out of the woods yet though, as we're now in the coldest part of the year and electricity use will peak.

He does credit the performance improvement to a few factors at Eskom and in government.

"The last two or three years we've had a very stable board, a very able board... we now have an excellent Minister of Energy and Electricity - also an engineer, who understands the landscape."
