Travellers using Johannesburg's O.R Tambo airport were advised this week to arrive early for their flights due to high congestion levels at departures.
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) announced on Tuesday that some passengers faced travel delays due to 'operational disruptions'.
Last week, the CEO of the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) stated that ACSA is not maintaining the airports properly, resulting in frequent delays and cancellations of flights.
So, what does this mean for passengers?
Birns states that, depending on the circumstances, you may be entitled to compensation.

"It depends on what has caused the delay and it also depends on what type of ticket you've purchased."

Birns says if the delay is caused by something that is within the airline's control, then it is likely you should receive compensation:
"They may well need to provide compensation in the form of accommodation and meals."

Birns states that delays caused by uncontrollable factors like weather or medical emergencies do not entitle passengers to compensation.
"You're pretty much on your own in that respect."

Birns emphasises that it is essential to familiarise yourself with the Terms and Conditions of your ticket.
"If you bought your ticket in South Africa, you may be entitled to one set of compensation, if you bought your ticket in the USA, you might be entitled to a very different set of compensations. Even though you might travelling on the same flight and be sat next to each other."
Linden Birns, Managing Director - Plane Talking
"Also if you bought your ticket through a travel agent, you might be entitled to different type of compensation than if you bought your ticket direct from the airline."
